“You lied to me every step of the way!” Leha stared impassively at Joshua as he tumbled with the forward momentum of his vicious attack. “You’re not human!” he screamed as he fell. His knife blade had ripped only flesh-foam and her clothing; nothing critical was affected. As he fell, the knife turned a little inward, so that the tip tore into his gut when his weight fell upon it.

Joshua moaned in pain and pulled the blade from his stomach wound. “You said we’d be Adam and Eve!”

“We will take your DNA contributions and use them to create variation in the protein manufacturing process of my kind. That is reproduction of a new line, if not of the kind you intended.”

“Last human being!” Joshua pressed his hands against the wound. The stalwart beauty did nothing to help him. “Why couldn’t they have engineered a real woman for me? I was fertile! You could clone one! But you just kept me … kept me alive instead, for all those years. Me, the last …” As the blood seeped into the fake sand, he wished she’d leave him to die in peace. He couldn’t stand to see her, the false hope of a future. She’d been a loyal servant, devoted companion, and endless lover. Until he saw there was no future in it from their fruitless forays and stopped. Then she became a demon, teasing and torturing to drive him to do his duty. “I thought I’d be Adam. I was able –“

“And you became Cain.”
